Development economist Tilman Brück elected to high-level UN expert panel

The United Nations appointed Prof. Tilman Brück to the Steering Committee on Food Security

Prof. Dr. Tilman Brück has been elected to the Steering Committee of the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). The United Nations panel is responsible for assessing scientific evidence related to global food security and nutrition. It is led by a steering committee consisting of 15 world-renowned scientists. Brück's appointment is in recognition of his significant contribution to food security and the second Sustainable Development Goal, ‘Zero Hunger’ (SDG2).

‘It is a great honour for me to join the HLPE-FSN Steering Committee,’ said Prof. Dr. Tilman Brück. ‘I look forward to helping make food systems more resilient in times of existential crises for low-income consumers and smallholder farmers around the world, thereby contributing to food security for all.’

Brück has been Heisenberg Professor of Economic Development and Food Security at the Thaer-Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) since 2022 and head of the research group ‘Economic Development and Food Security’ at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) in Großbeeren (near Berlin). He also heads the Zero Hunger Lab, a joint institution of HU and IGZ.

Around 800 million people worldwide suffer from malnutrition – nearly 50 million people are acutely affected by famine, for example in Yemen, South Sudan and Gaza. 60 per cent of malnutrition and 80 per cent of famine worldwide is caused by war and violence. Against this backdrop, Tilman Brück uses microeconomic analyses to investigate how crises in Africa, the Middle East and Asia affect people's lives, their income, nutrition and food security in the long term. His goal is to develop new policy instruments, especially for humanitarian emergency aid and development aid. The aim is to end hunger, achieve food security and better nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture, because too many people around the world still suffer from hunger or malnutrition.

Brück regularly advises national governments, the European Commission, international organisations, the United Nations, the World Bank and non-governmental organisations on issues of food security, development, crises and conflict.
