Enrolling as a Doctoral Candidate - Requirements

Graduates of Humboldt-Universität who have received diplom, masters or magister degrees, or who have completed their first state exam, are in principle eligible to engage in doctoral work.

Graduates of other universities can be admitted as doctoral candidates if their degrees are considered equivalent to those of Humboldt-Universität, in accordance with current law.

A degree earned from a college of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) with very good marks is also acceptable, to the extent allowed by the faculties rules regarding the granting of doctoral degrees.

In general, it is necessary to have a written commitment to serve as a thesis supervisor from a university instructor. Interested graduates present their expose to the supervising instructor and coordinate it with him or her. This commitment is voided if the doctoral committee fails to admit the graduate to the faculty where the doctoral work will be completed (see: ein roter Pfeil How to Obtain a Doctoral Degree).

Any special requirements may be found in the ein roter Pfeil regulations for doctoral studies of the faculty at which the doctorate is being completed.
