This splendid building opposite the Pergamon Museum is often incorrectly labelled the home of Hegel, who in fact lived at neighbouring number 4a, which was later torn down.

Originally built as a three-storey stucco building, a floor was added to this residential building at Am Kupfergraben 5 in the last quarter of the 19th century and the facade was decorated with typical neo-Renaissance reliefs and ornamentation. Four of the front building’s six axes were destroyed during the Second World War. The building has belonged to the university since 1949 and was renovated between 1972 and 1982. It is now home to the Musicology Seminar.
