SUMMARY:FDM@BUA Online-Event: Linking biological collections: data, standar
 ds, collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The talk presents the challenges of sustainable local collectio
n data management, both within individual institutions and in collaboratio
ns Anton Güntsch, head of the Center for Biodiversity Informatics and Col
lection Data Integration at the Botanic Garden Berlin, will give you an ov
erview of the management and linkage of biological collection data in a lo
cal, national, and international context. Using the example of the Botanic
Garden Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin), the diversity of biological co
llections will be presented—from preserved collection specimens to livin
g collections, seeds, tissue and DNA samples, and multimedia objects—and
their importance for biological research will be highlighted. The focus is
on the challenges of sustainable local collection data management, both w
ithin individual institutions and in collaborations. In addition, national
and international networking approaches as well as relevant standards and
infrastructures are presented. This highlights why standards alone are no
t sufficient and how semantic interoperability can be achieved through tar
geted data annotation. Finally, current developments in the digitization of
biological collections and citizen-science-based approaches to data trans
cription will be presented. Please register here.
