DESCRIPTION:This panel discussion “Academic Freedom at Risk: European Uni
 versities between Resilience and Responsibility” with university preside
 nts from Berlin and Paris explores protection programmes for at-risk schol
 ars. It asks how higher education institutions can safeguard freedom, soli
 darity, and openness under pressure. Advocating for academic freedom and i
 mplementing programmes to host at-risk scholars and artists bring fundamen
 tal challenges into focus: how resilient are universities, and are they ab
 le to provide safe and supportive environments?Providing protection and pr
 ospects for those at risk is not only an act of solidarity; it is also cen
 tral to the mission of universities to defend intellectual freedom and the
  pursuit of knowledge. However, this commitment is under increasing pressu
 re: anti-democratic tendencies and tightening budget constraints make it m
 ore difficult for academic institutions to remain open, inclusive and inte
 rnationally connected, while also protecting those whose work and voices a
