SUMMARY:Populist Politics in Comparative Perspective: Drivers, Manifestatio
 ns, and Democratic Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Part of a Circle U. course on the topic, this lecture by Lars V
 . Johannsen, Aarhus University, is open to the entire Circle U. community.
  Master students from the Social Sciences and Area Studies across Circle U
 . universities are particularly encouraged to join. The lecture examines p
 opulism as a thin-centered ideology structured around a moralized oppositi
 on between “the people” and “the elite.” It traces the historical 
 development of populist movements, differentiates left and right-wing vari
 ants, and analyses contemporary demand and supply-side drivers. The sessio
 n explores how media environments shape populist communication and assesse
 s the political and institutional consequences of populism within democrat
 ic systems, including polarisation, norm erosion, and shifts in party comp
 etition. Empirical cases from Europe, the Americas, and beyond illustrate 
 these dynamics. A subsequent session will apply these concepts through a p
 ractical coding exercise analysing populist content in political speeches.
