Establishing an Institute for Islamic Theology at the HU

Joint Announcement of the Berlin Senate Chancellery: Higher Education and Research and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Berlin Senate Chancellery: Higher Education and Research are pursuing the aim of establishing an Institute for Islamic Theology in Berlin. The foundation for this project is composed of the 2016 White Paper on Islamic Theology and the Cooperation Agreement on the Formation of an Advisory Board, which was elaborated by the university and Islamic associations in a joint working group under the direction of the Founding Director Prof. Dr. Michael Borgolte from April 2017 to March 2018.

The HU is now initiating the process of setting up the Institute. This includes consultations and decisions by various inner-university bodies, with the aim of having the Board of Trustees of the HU decide about the establishing of a Central Institute for Islamic Theology at the end of June. The procedural steps for making appointments to the four professorships needing to be filled should begin immediately thereafter.

The establishment of the Advisory Board for the institute will take place in parallel. The latter will be set up by the time the first professors are appointed.

The Berlin Senate Chancellery: Higher Education and Research and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin would like to thank the participating Islamic associations for their contribution. The present Cooperation Agreement has been signed by the Islamische Gemeinschaft der schiitischen Gemeinden Deutschlands e.V. Following consultation of its members, the Berlin chapter of the Zentralrat der Muslime in Deutschland e.V. has announced its consent to the present Cooperation Agreement. The Islamische Föderation in Berlin e.V. wants to consult its membership on the present Cooperation Agreement within one week.

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Berlin Senate Chancellery: Higher Education and Research would like expressly to thank the Founding Commissioner, Prof. Dr. Michael Borgolte, for his hitherto always competent and reliable work, which he has continually undertaken in close consultation with the Humboldt-Universität.
