Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Cooperation partners from science and research

Collaboration with the large number of research institutions based in and around Berlin provides Humboldt Universität with many opportunities to intensify research on highly specialised topics. For example, such work is conducted in „Joint- Labs“.

Moreover, cooperation partners of the Humboldt Universität have a long-term positive impact on the University’s day-to-day research and teaching activities. Humboldt Universität and its partners do not only collaborate on individual projects. Long-term collaborations, which are backed up by cooperation agreements, also always involve strategic components.

The joint appointment of special professors by Humboldt Universität and other research institutions is an important element of joint research.

Endowed professorships, on the other hand, are initially established for a limited period of five or ten years with the financial support of foundations or patrons. After this funding ends, Humboldt Universität may decide to maintain the professorships.

Affiliated institutes are yet another type of collaboration. These legally independent organisations also increase the range of research and teaching activities at the Humboldt Universität. These institutes are run by a faculty member of the Humboldt Universität.

Humboldt Universität works with institutes in the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Association. This collaboration often involves the joint appointment of a special professor. The focus is on the natural and life sciences. Humboldt Universität also works closely on research and teaching activities with other organisations such as the Social Science Research Center Berlin.

Some of the Berlin-based Leibniz institutes have joined forces to form the Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V.

Helmholtz Logo

Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF)

Humboldt Universität has been involved in successful research collaborations with several institutions from the Helmholtz Association of German Research Associations for many years. Joint special professorships have been established in cooperation with the natural science institutes of Humboldt Universität. For example, jointly appointed scientists from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine and Humboldt Universität conduct research at the interface between medical and natural scientific basic research at the recently founded Integrative Research Institute (IRI) for the Life Sciences at the Humboldt Universität. Humboldt Universität also works closely with Helmholtz Association institutions on joint programmes to promote young researchers.

Max Planck Society (MPG)

Researchers from several Max Planck Society institutions work closely with Humboldt Universität. The focus is on the life and natural sciences, but there is also close collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, both of which are based in Berlin. As a result, hot research topics can quickly become integrated into the curriculum at the Humboldt Universität.

Fraunhofer Logo
Fraunhofer Society (FhG)

As Europe’s largest organisation for applied research, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and its institutes offer extensive expertise and international contacts, which can be further enhanced by collaboration with the natural science institutes of the Humboldt Universität. Fraunhofer institutes in and around Berlin primarily collaborate with Humboldt Universität in the field of physics and computer science via special professorships and joint research projects.

Logo BBAW

Humboldt Universität and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) have established joint professorships. Research projects in the fields of history and theology are carried out in close cooperation with the institutions of the Humboldt Universität as a result of this collaboration.
