Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Leave of absence

Students who plan to take a leave of absence for one semester during their studies can submit a written application for leave of absence up to six weeks after the start of the semester on registration renewal. [PDF]

A leave of absence will be granted for up to two semesters for acceptable reasons; it can only be extended to three consecutive semesters in exceptional cases. During the leave of absence, the right to attend classes (with an exception in the case of maternity leave) and the right to use the semester ticket is suspended. Other rights, for example the right to take exams, are retained, provided the admission requirements to take the exam were obtained before the leave of absence. Leave of absence is not usually permitted in the first and second semester of a subject.

Possible reasons for a leave of absence are:

  • Study visits or training periods abroad
  • Performing elected functions on the Humboldt-Universität’s self-governing bodies
  • Completing a mandatory internship
  • Disability and chronic illness
  • The protected periods specified in sections 3 et seq. German Protection of Mothers Act and
taking parental leave in accordance with the applicable legal or statutory stipulations
  • Employment of at least 50% of standard working hours
  • Care of dependent close relatives as defined by the German Home Care Leave Act
  • Other reasons of equal value.
