Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Guest students*

Note: The following information does not apply to the School of Medicine! For questions, also concerning the "Senior Citizens University“ there. Please contact directly: Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, phone +49 (0)30 450-576042

Being a guest student means attending one or more classes of study programmes offered at Humboldt over a semester. Guest students will not be enrolled and, thus, not be given ordinary student status. Find the relevant regulations at: "General Regulations for Studies and Examination Matters“ of Humboldt Universität.

Information on the classes offered, when exactly and where they are held, who is lecturing and if there are special requirements students must meet for entrance can be obtained from the annotated course catalogues of the faculties or institutes, or found on their websites (www.hu-berlin.de/institutions/faculties-and-departments). Addresses and phone numbers of the faculties/institutes are to be found there as well. Telephone calls via the switchboard. Just dial +49 (0)30 2093-0 for the internal switchboard. If advice is needed on a suitable choice of lectures, please contact the Studienfachberatung (Course Counselling Service) at the faculty/institute of your choice.

You may apply for a guest studentship by completing a form (see below). You are then required to get the consent and signature of the staff member whose lectures or class you wish to attend. If there are no free places left students enrolled at Humboldt will have to be given priority. No deadline must be met for the application, but it is recommended to attend the first session. The semester usually starts on a Monday in either mid-October or mid-April. The status of guest student will, if agreed upon, be valid until the end of the semester the student applied for.

There are two categories of guest students:

occasional students/auditors
(Gasthörer/innen)
visiting students
(Nebenhörer/innen)
  • As an occasional student/auditor you do not need to submit a secondary school leaving certificate (Abitur).
  • A tuition fee of currently 15 euros per 45 minutes of teaching or 30 euros for a lecture or class of 90 minutes over one semester will currently have to be paid.
  • As an occasional student/auditor you are not eligible for taking examinations. Instead you may be given a certificate of achievement.
  • Certified achievements of occasional students/auditors will not be recognised for entering a full-time course of study, which means there will be no preferential treatment when they apply for a course with restricted entry (Numerus clausus course).
  • Every semester the Referat Programmentwicklung (see below) publishes a brochure with special offers for Gasthörer. It contains lectures and classes that might be particularly interesting and suitable for this type of student. Please note that the Ring Lectures advertised in the brochure are completely free of charge.
  • As a visiting student or Nebenhörer/in you are supposed to be a student enrolled at another higher education institution in Berlin or the state of Brandenburg and, in addition, you attend some classes at Humboldt, which are relevant to your field of study.
  • The number of classes you take at Humboldt must not exceed six periods of 45 minutes per week or one module.
  • You do not have to pay tuition fees.
  • You may obtain achievement certificates and credit points. If the examiners at Humboldt agree you may take exams within the continuous assessment scheme. But you may not legally claim to be examined.
  • Please note that the recognition of achievements earned as a Nebenhörer/in is a responsibility of the institution at which you are enrolled. It is, therefore, advisable to communicate with the responsible persons there before you start.

*The term "guest student" here covers two different categories of students: "Gasthörer/innen" and "Nebenhörer/innen". Find a more precise definition in the box above.
