Information for Prospective Students

Interested in studying at Humboldt-Universität? Here are the sources of information you may find useful:

  • Studienangebot, i.e. the survey of courses offered at Humboldt, which is also available as a brochure from the self-information section of the General Counselling Service, is published on 1 June every year. It includes the whole range of courses alongside with information about possible restrictions on admission to courses (numerus clausus). If, on the internet, you click on the course you are interested in you'll find a more detailed Studiengangsbeschreibung (course description) in German with information about the combinability of courses, specific entrance requirements, the course structure, length and content of courses and about language requirements. Besides, you'll find useful links explaining the criteria of admission and the NC-Grenzwerte (minimum entrance requirements). It is certainly also very useful to check on the links on module descriptions and on Kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis (Annotated Catalogue of Lectures) because there you can see which content components are dealt with in a particular course so that you can easily find out whether or not it is the right course for you. And perhaps you choose to have a try yourself at one of the lectures? At the end of the course description you will find a link to the Studienfachberatung, the course counselling service which you may contact to discuss more specific questions.

Where will you get help if you have further questions?

  • For answering questions about the content and the focus of a particular course, etc. there is a Studienfachberatung, a specific course-related counselling service.
  • If you have questions concerning career prospects after graduation you should contact one of the  Berufsinformationszentren (Job Information Centres) of the Agentur für Arbeit (Job Centre), e.g. at its aghency in Friedrichstrasse 39, D – 10969 Berlin, phone: +49 30 5555 99 2626. The Studienfachberatung service may also be of help.
  • If you wish to talk to students currently on the course, there is the studentische Studienberatung (peer counselling service). There you could get advice from a student's point of view. The service can be contacted at many faculties, institutes and departments.
  • Questions across the range of courses will be answered by the Counselling Services. You may also make an appointment for a personal consultation.
  • For information on questions concerning the formalities of applying or enrolling you should refer to the Humboldt online application site. If a couple of questions remain open, we refer you to the Compass-Hotline.

Finally, here is an invitation to young people at high school:

  • Every year there is a Studieninformationswoche, an open information week, at Humboldt-Universität. On this occasion faculties, institutes and departments present their course programmes. You may visit a selection of standard lectures and seminars and talk to students. By attending specific lectures and participating in guided tours you may gather information on many specific aspects of university studies, e.g. academic qualifications and degrees, the procedure of applying and enrolling, learning and studying techniques at university, studying outside Germany, grants and loans (Bafög), the Language Centre, etc. The timetable of the information week will be published on the web at www.siw.hu-berlin.de.

Next Studieninformationswoche: 4 to 8 February, 2013.

  • A wide range of specific offers by Humboldt faculties is to be found at www.hu-berlin.de/schueler/.
  • If you wish to visit Humboldt-Universität as a group and to book a guided tour of the University main building and its surroundings: www.hu-berlin.de/studium/compass/fuehrungen. After the tour you may use the comprehensive collection of information material for prospective students displayed at Student Service Center, Unter den Linden 6; also available at Counselling Services, Invalidenstraße 110, fifth floor.
  • There will be a question time event for prospective students every Wednesday at 3 pm in the application period from June to mid-July.
  • Please, note also: Hochschulmesse "Studieren in Berlin und Brandenburg" ("Academic Studies in Berlin and Brandenburg"), the roadshow of higher education institutions in the Berlin and Brandeburg region which takes place every year. Next occasion: on a Friday in March 2013, from 10 am to 6 pm at the Rotes Rathaus (Berlin City Hall).

For those who intend to embark on a Master's course:
