As a university, HU has a responsibility to engage with current discourse from an academic perspective. This means that, through enhanced teaching and communication, we can attempt to counter the widespread use of false stereotypes. After all, a well-founded, objective approach makes it significantly harder for anti-Semitic tendencies to spread and gain a foothold within the university. At the same time, our focus is very much on our Jewish students and staff. Whilst we cannot guarantee complete safety – for anyone – across our numerous and widely scattered premises, we can strive to ensure as much safety as possible.
Point of contact for students and staff
The Anti-Semitism Prevention Unit is a point of contact for students and staff who experience or witness anti-Semitic incidents, who are seeking guidance on how to deal with anti-Semitic remarks or situations, or who have questions about prevention and raising awareness in teaching and study.
Advice, documentation of incidents and prevention
Where necessary, we refer people to other (counselling) services and assist in documenting incidents and responding appropriately. We work closely with the current Anti-Semitism Officer of the University Executive Board, Mr Niels Helle-Meyer, and his team of trusted advisors. Our work is guided by the perspective of those affected and places a strong emphasis on prevention.

Niels Helle-Meyer, HU Vice-President for Finance, Human Resources and Technology, has been the HU’s Anti-Semitism Officer since August 2025. In this interview, he discusses the challenges of combating anti-Semitism. In doing so, he places particular emphasis on prevention, networking and academic discourse.
Networks and partnerships
Our main external partner is the counselling service OFEK e.V., which specialises in anti-Semitism and community-based support for those affected. Together with OFEK, we also regularly offer awareness-raising and empowerment workshops.
For networking with other students, we recommend Tacheles, a student group comprising Jewish and non-Jewish HU students.
