Gender equality policy in higher education through targeted support for women

Women remain under-represented in research, teaching and at almost all academic and artistic levels of qualification, particularly in professorial posts and leadership roles. The State of Berlin is committed to targeted measures to promote equal opportunities for women and to establish gender-equitable structures and cultures. The Berlin Equal Opportunities Programme (BCP) supports gender equality measures at universities.

Since its introduction by the Berlin Senate in 2001, the BCP has developed into a key instrument of higher education equality policy. It aims to achieve a sustainable improvement in the representation of women at all academic levels and in leadership positions, and to embed gender considerations in research and teaching. The principle of selecting the best candidates guarantees support at the highest level.
