Measures
In recent years, a number of measures have been implemented: the creation of the Family Support Office as a central organisational and service hub; the establishment of the Commission Family-Friendly University as a standing commission of the Academic Senate; the inclusion of the goal of work-life balance in the HU’s constitution; the expansion of flexible study options; and the development of family-friendly infrastructure and childcare facilities. Key milestones include the opening of the HU nursery, the formalisation of regulations on compensating for disadvantages within the HU Student Services Centre (ZSP-HU), and the annual Family Festival as a platform for exchange and networking.
Expansion to include diversity
In 2025, HU’s certificate was extended and confirmed to cover ‘family-friendly university + diversity’. With this re-audit, HU is continuing its long-term commitment to further developing the compatibility of work, study and professional development with family life, whilst simultaneously strengthening the university’s appeal as a place to work and study.
With the addition of the focus on diversity, HU is now paying particular attention to equal opportunities in all their dimensions, to raising awareness among all members of the university community, and to anti-discrimination measures. In addition to optimising ongoing projects – including the equitable promotion of international mobility and digitalisation in study and work – the focus in future will be primarily on further institutionalising family-friendly and diversity strategies within the framework of equal opportunities, as well as on measures to prevent anti-Semitism and racism.
The ‘family-friendly university + diversity’ project is led by the heads of the Family Support and Anti-Discrimination & Diversity teams within the Centre for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging.
Action Plan
The current action plan for the ‘family-friendly university + diversity’ audit runs for three years. It is the result of extensive participatory formats such as strategy and status group workshops, as well as dialogue days in which the university management and numerous members of the university community have participated.
