Accessibility & Mobility

Unfortunately, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is not fully accessible across all its campuses. However, we are constantly improving our buildings, rooms and central areas to ensure that your journey to your classes is as accessible as possible.

Information on physical accessibility

The course catalogue (AGNES) includes icons indicating accessibility features for several buildings and teaching rooms. Clicking on the relevant course brings up a details page with information on the premises, times and contact persons.

Accessible toilets

Accessible toilets are available in the buildings that are wheelchair-accessible. These are operated using a Euro key. The Sozialverband VdK Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. is responsible for issuing the Euro keys.

Parking spaces for people with reduced mobility

Designated parking spaces for your car are available at almost all buildings, either on the street or on the university campus. Most car parks are freely accessible. To access the university courtyard, you can apply for a barrier key or a tag. If a parking permit is required, you can apply for one through the Studying with a Disability Consultation Service.

Lifts

Lifts are available in the larger buildings. All lifts that have already been refurbished are equipped with floor announcements and visual floor indicators, have Braille on the buttons and are wheelchair-accessible. Incline lifts are in use in some older buildings. A Euro key is also required for incline lifts and some lifts. For this purpose, the University uses a standardised locking system with a simple plug-in key.

HU locations – access and barriers

HU has three campuses within Berlin: Nord, Mitte and Adlershof. Students on combined bachelor’s degree programmes may need to move from one campus to another.

Below you will find information on the individual campuses:

Depending on which faculty you wish to visit on the North Campus, there are various ways to get there. The address of the “Berlin School of Mind and Brain”, Luisenstraße 56, 10117 Berlin, is recommended as the central meeting point. The “Charité – Campus Mitte” stop (bus 147) is nearby. If you wish to go to the Mensa Nord or the Campus Nord branch library, it is advisable to travel by wheelchair or pushchair to the “Naturkundemuseum” underground station (U6). From there, it is approximately 550 metres. If you are travelling by train, it is best to take the tram (M10) from “Hauptbahnhof” to the “Naturkundemuseum” underground station.

Known barriers:

  1. The following buildings offer barrier-free access:
    Invalidenstraße 42, 110 and 118, and Philippistraße 13 / Building 25.
All other buildings are not barrier-free.
  2. Hessische Straße 2, Emil-Fischer-Hörsaal:
Access for people in wheelchairs, with walking difficulties or with pushchairs is only possible via the Campus Nord branch library with the assistance of security staff.

The main building of Campus Mitte, located at Unter den Linden 6, 10117 Berlin, is best accessed by wheelchair from the “Friedrichstraße” S-Bahn and U-Bahn station or from the “Unter den Linden” U-Bahn station (U5/U6). From “Alexanderplatz” station, accessible buses (100, 245) run to the “Staatsoper” stop; from there, it is 85 metres to the main building.

The car park for people with reduced mobility is located in the courtyard of the main building on the west wing side – if you drive onto the site, it is on the left-hand side after approximately 20 metres.

There are also designated parking spaces at Dorotheenstraße 24, but these are regularly occupied by unauthorised vehicles.

There is no car park at Georgenstraße 47, and the underground car park does not have automatic doors.

Known barriers:

  1. Dorotheenstraße 28: The building is not accessible and is currently undergoing renovation.
  2. Unter den Linden 6 (main building): Cobblestones at the entrance via the Ehrenhof and through the inner courtyard from Dorotheenstraße; there are also restrictions due to construction work on the east wing – here, accessible entry is only possible via the lift in the west wing. For assistance with finding your way around the building, please contact the security guard to the left of the main entrance.

The Adlershof Campus is located in south-east Berlin. The recommended central meeting point is the ‘Erwin Schrödinger Centre’ at Rudower Chaussee 26, 12489 Berlin. If you are using a wheelchair or a pushchair, the best way to get there is from Adlershof S-Bahn station; from there, it is about 850 metres to the campus. From Adlershof S-Bahn station, you can also take the accessible tram (M63) to Magnusstraße. From there, it is a further 140 metres.

Unfortunately, the HU-designated parking spaces for people with reduced mobility at Rudower Chaussee 16/18 are regularly occupied by unauthorised vehicles.

Known barriers:

  1. Rudower Chaussee 25 (Johann-von-Neumann-Haus): No stair markings (steps and risers on the internal staircases).
  2. Rudower Chaussee 26 (Erwin Schrödinger Centre): No automatic doors at the side entrance to the Forum; cobblestones at the main entrance.
  3. Zum Großen Windkanal 6, Buildings 1 and 2 (to the Institute of Psychology, PC lab).

The main university library, the Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm Centre, is easily accessible by wheelchair or pushchair via both the main entrance and the side entrance at Planckstraße 14.

Further information about the building can be found in the floor plan and in the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Centre leaflet.

The studierendenWERK Berlin operates canteens and cafeterias at nine locations across the HU campus.

The following facilities are accessible to students using wheelchairs or pushchairs:

  1. Mensa Süd and Säulenmensa (Unter den Linden 6)
  2. Mensa Nord (Hannoversche Straße)
  3. BAföG Office (Behrenstraße)
  4. Adlershof Cafeteria, Rudower Chaussee 25, Building 2

Report barriers!

Many physical barriers arise unintentionally, partly because many of HU’s buildings are listed or because the university only rents them. If you notice any barriers – such as a broken accessible toilet, a faulty lift or a parking space for people with disabilities being used by someone else – you can report them here.

Inclusion & accessibility

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is committed to creating an inclusive environment. A disability should not be a barrier to participation in university life. We are therefore constantly working to break down physical, digital and social barriers – to create a university where everyone can conduct research, teach, study and work. Our key focus areas are studying with a disability, accessibility and mobility, and digital accessibility.
