Family-Friendly Infrastructure

Baby-changing facilities on campus, children’s meals in the Mensa, child-friendly workspaces and family-friendly areas in the library: here is an overview of spaces that expectant mothers, parents and other carers with children can use together. These include family rooms, baby-changing points and more services.

Overview: Family-Friendly Infrastructure

Each HU campus has a number of family rooms which you can use with your children for working, studying, breastfeeding or relaxing. The rooms are equipped with toys and books for different age groups, have a nappy-changing facility, sometimes a sofa or armchair, and in some cases a workspace. The family rooms can also be used and booked for childcare or playgroups.

The central terms of use, which are displayed on the premises, apply to all family rooms. The team at the Family Support Office will be happily advise and support you in planning and setting up further rooms – please get in touch! You can find an initial overview in our guide to setting up family rooms.

As a portable addition to the family rooms, the KidsBox Mini is available for loan to all members of the HU from the Family Support Office. It transforms any room into a small children’s play area in no time at all and can therefore be used – subject to agreement with a manager or lecturer – in a lecture theatre, at a workplace or even during an event.

The KidsBox Mini is equipped for babies and children up to primary school age. It contains:

  • a travel cot, which can also be used as a playpen
  • a play mat for crawling and playing on the floor
  • a stool and table for slightly older children
  • various toys and colouring materials
  • children’s books
  • a changing mat
  • Disinfectant and first-aid kit
  • a locker

The KidsBox folds out to provide a private area for breastfeeding and nappy changing.

The dimensions of the KidsBox Mini are 88 x 112 x 58 centimetres (W x H x D). It is fitted with castors and can be easily transported to the place of use. Due to its size and weight, we recommend using a lift. If you no longer need the KidsBox, it must be returned.

Play bags containing a selection of toys, storybooks and picture books, art supplies, building blocks and so on for various age groups are available at various locations across the university. These are available to all members of HU who bring their child or children with them to, for example, a conference, a lecture, a seminar or other events. The play bags can also be used for childcare during a conference. The play bags can only be borrowed on a daily basis and during the opening hours of the respective facility.

At the studierendenWERK Berlin canteens, children up to the age of six are entitled to a free meal. This offer is only available to students who are registered canteen users and can present a valid student ID card. You can obtain the Kids-MensaCard at the cash desks of the larger canteens that have a canteen administration office.

At HU, the Adlershof canteen, the South Canteen (Campus Mitte) and the North Canteen offer free meals for children.
