Project description
and working instrument of scholarly analyses, and can be important tools for the exchange of knowledge within and between communities. However, a bibliography of the German-language Heftroman (dime novel) does not exist: Heftromane are neither explicitly categorized as such nor fully listed in the catalog of the German National Library; existing directories are typically temporally or topically focused and, for the most part, not freely available in digital form. The lack of a standardized bibliography makes it extremely difficult to answer fundamental research questions on the description and analysis of the Heftroman media genre. This sub-project (SP) therefore aims to develop a framework for the modelling and quality assurance of research-oriented bibliographies and to create a bibliography of the German-language Heftroman that is available online according to the FAIR principles and as complete
as possible, which is both machine-readable in standardized formats and accessible to humans via suitable (search) interfaces, while providing structured information on the provenance and reliability of the consolidated data.As part of this, we want to investigate how the special features of the media genre of the Heftroman – such as complex authorship and textual relationships, the structure of series, and the classification of genres – can be modeled. In addition, we will develop approaches for the explicit bibliographical representation of vagueness and uncertainties (to be able to qualify aspects such as assumptions, contradictions, errors, nescience, and gaps) as well as the provenance of knowledge (e.g., original data, cleansed or automatically supplemented data). In order to determine and ensure data quality, we will investigate the extent to which machine learning methods are suitable for recognizing and correcting errors and how logic and consistency rules (e.g., plausibility checks for the existence of series) enable validity to be checked. On the other hand, we will explore how the quality of collaborative bibliographies created by readers and fans can be determined and to what extent these datasets can serve as a supplement to institutionally maintained catalogs. To this end, we will develop suitable methods and instruments for collecting, consolidating, and indexing this typically web-based, very heterogeneous data.On the one hand, the SP is a central interface project that builds bridges between all SPs by providing standardized metadata for the research unit and thus enabling other SPs to link and share their data and metadata. On the other hand, it provides input on the important issue of data quality and attempts to answer fundamental questions about the corpus. It is just as relevant for all SPs of the research unit as it is dependent on their constant input and is therefore in permanent exchange with all participants.
