Project description

The project deals with preparing the first edition of Jacob Burckhardt's lectures on the history of the age of revolution. Within the work of the probably most eminent German-speaking historian of the nineteenth century these lectures occupy a position of major importance. The state of the manuscript and its various textual layers make the edition a complex and highly demanding task. Besides constituting the text of the manuscript the edition consists in working out a commentary on the text requiring intensive and far-reaching research.

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) has granted funds for two years with a one-year extension for two part-time researchers and two undergraduate assistants. The edition has been getting ahead very well and is running according to schedule. A second phase of another two to three years has to be applied for in autumn 2003.</p
