Sound System Epistemologies: Knowledge & gender in practice

The inter-disciplinary research group "Sound System Epistemologies: Knowledge
engendered through Practice" (SSE) theorises, for the first time, the sound system as an international performance configuration, thus construeing a new model of musicological investigation. SSE investigates how masculinity and knowledge production are dynamically intertwined in sound system practice. In three funded and two associated SPs, researchers
conduct contrasting and interconnected case studies on (SP1) batida in Lisbon, (SP2) female
and queer sound system initiatives in London, (SP3) freetekno in Central Europe, acid house
and deutschrap. As individual SPs progress researchers compare their findings, discuss common themes and differences and extrapolate overarching theoretical tendencies. Envisioned outputs are: 2 PhDs theses/1 habilitation + subsequent monographs; MA thesis on sirens; edited volume „Anthology of Sound System Practice“ (e.g. Oxford Handbook, or Cambridge Companion); 5 research
articles in peer-reviewed journals; special journal issue "Sound System Epistemologies" (e.g. in
„Technology and Culture“ or „Contemporary Music Review“); preliminary versions of print
outputs as working papers (e.g. on hypotheses.org) to make research results visible and citable
early on; 1 research symposium; 3 conference panels; sound system exhibition at SIM Berlin;
hybrid exhibition catalogue; guest lecture series at SIM Berlin.
