HU Institutional Strategy: History of the City of Cologne in the German Empire (1871–1918) (Funding Line Creating Opportunities)

As a latecomer of urbanisation, Cologne underwent a rapid process of making up leeway that was characterised by high mobility and social cataclysm. Hence the question derives how these rapid changes were coped with. Impulses of traditionalisation and localisation (such as carnival or the historicization of Cologne) can be understood as techniques to digest rapid modernization.
