HU Institutional Strategy: KOSMOS Workshop 2014 – What is European History?

The KOSMOS workshop will discuss numerous concepts, such as “time”, “space”, “source” and “author” in relation with the conceptualization of “Europe”. When does the history of Europe start, and when does it end? Can one already speak of “European History” in the age of classical antiquity? Is a Christian-dominated narrative of the “Middle Ages” sufficient for European history, or does it need to consider Jewish and Islamic history too? Where does Europe end in terms of space? What differentiates the contemporary history writings of historians from those of non-historians? These will be questions to be discussed.
