Everyone has experiences with family relationships - a new exhibition at the Humboldt Forum offers the opportunity to question and expand personal ideas about what constitutes a family.
"Beziehungsweise Familie" is not an exhibition in the traditional sense. Instead, visitors to the special exhibition area on the ground floor of the Humboldt Forum will find stations where they can explore the tensions of family life - in some cases interactively. The topic can be explored in greater depth using selected objects in all the exhibition areas of the various museums in the Humboldt Forum, such as the Museum of Asian Art, the City Museum or the Humboldt Laboratory of the Humboldt University (HU). The exhibition "Beziehungsweise Familie" is also the start of the themed year of the same name at the Humboldt Forum. A HU lecture series on the topic with researchers from Germany and abroad has already started in the winter semester 2024 and will run until the summer semester 2026.
HU students also involved
"With the topic of family, we want to appeal to a wide range of people and show how diverse family life can be, even beyond the nuclear family," says Daniel Tyradellis, Humboldt Forum Endowed Professor for the Theory and Practice of Interdisciplinary Curating at the HU's Centre for Cultural Technology (ZfK). Tyradellis is part of the curatorial core team of the theme year and developed the ideas and realisation together with the Humboldt Forum participants. HU students who took part in seminars on the theory and practice of curating the ZfK were also involved.
The exhibition "Beziehungsweise Familie" is the first joint project of the Humboldt Forum stakeholders, which include the Humboldt University, the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace, the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art (both Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation/State Museums of Berlin) and the Berlin City Museum Foundation.
