Up to 300 primary school children from various Berlin schools will come together in the mechanical arena at the Humboldt Forum for the Kinder-Kiez-Slam on 30 June 2025. Some of the children present will recite poems and texts that they have previously written themselves in workshops at their schools with the "Humboldt spoken word poet" Bas Böttcher.
The project was organised in close cooperation between the Department of Education Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and the HU's Humboldt Lab. The aim is to promote the artistic and linguistic development of children and to offer them a community in which they can freely express their ideas and emotions. By involving Bas Böttcher, a co-founder of the German poetry slam scene, the participants can also learn from an artistic role model how meaningful the power of language can be.
Prof Dr Petra Anders, Professor of German Teaching and Didactics at the HU, is responsible for the project. She was recently awarded the Communicator Prize of the Stifterverband by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for science communication for her commitment to promoting children's reading and language skills in projects such as the Kinder-Kiez-Slam. The Communicator Award ceremony will be held in Hamburg on the evening of 30 June 2025 - after the second edition of the Kinder-Kiez-Slam took place at the Humboldt Forum in Berlin.
