With the war in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz blocked, the world is facing a new energy crisis. International disputes over energy are intensifying. Under the banner of “American energy dominance”, US President Trump is pushing for a return to fossil fuels, hindering progress on clean energy and undermining international agreements. China, on the other hand, has taken a leading role in clean technologies and is launching a veritable “electrotech revolution”. Europe faces the challenge of protecting its domestic industry and reaffirming its focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Governments in Africa, Asia and Latin America are making their energy policy decisions amidst the conflicting priorities of energy access, industrial development and energy security. For the countries of the Global South, the question arises as to how they should respond internationally and what implications partnerships with Europe might have.
These and other topics are on the agenda of the 2nd Berlin Forum on Global Cooperation on 18 and 19 May. Participants include Gabriel Boric, former President of Chile; Jürgen Trittin, former Federal Minister for the Environment; Bärbel Kofler, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMZ; and Adriana Abdenur, Co-President of the Global Fund for a New Economy and former Special Adviser to the Brazilian Presidency on International Affairs. Markus Hanisch, Director of the Seminar for Rural Development (SLE) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, as well as Layla al-Zubaidi and Jörg Haas from the Heinrich Böll Foundation, will deliver the opening remarks. The event is a collaboration between the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the SLE at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
