With this award, the GEBF recognises not only Petra Stanat’s outstanding academic achievements, for example in national education monitoring or research into disparities related to migration. Her life’s work is also characterised by her commitment to translating research findings into education policy, administration and practice, as well as her long-standing dedication to supporting academic careers. She supports the further development of empirical educational research, amongst other things, through her involvement in committees of the German Research Foundation (DFG), currently as a member of the Senate.
Petra Stanat studied and obtained her doctorate in psychology and completed her habilitation in educational science. She was Professor of Empirical Classroom Research at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and of Educational Science at Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2010, Petra Stanat has been the Scientific Director of the Institute for Quality Development in Education (IQB) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Through over 300 publications, more than 30 externally funded projects and her involvement in numerous international and national committees, Petra Stanat’s interdisciplinary research at the IQB makes significant contributions to quality assurance and quality development in the general education system. This is always a matter of teamwork, said Petra Stanat at the award ceremony. The award therefore also recognises the work of the entire IQB and its partners in pursuit of the shared goal: to make education in Germany better and fairer for everyone.
The GEBF
The GEBF brings together researchers active in empirical educational research and promotes interdisciplinary research in this field. The GEBF also aims to disseminate the findings of empirical educational research and to promote cooperation between disciplines. The GEBF Lifetime Achievement Award – one of the GEBF’s most prestigious honours – recognises individuals who have played a special role in the development of empirical educational research in Germany. Following Prof. Dr Jürgen Baumert, Director Emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, and Prof. Dr Eckhard Klieme, long-standing Director at the DIPF, Petra Stanat is the third recipient of the GEBF Lifetime Achievement Award.
