25 Anniversary of Centre for British Studies

The UK Centre is an interdisciplinary institute for regional studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin. With its research, its international Master's programme and its regular lectures for the general public, the Centre has established itself over the last 25 years as an important voice for everything British in the heart of Berlin.

When the Centre for British Studies (Großbritannienzentrum - GBZ) of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) was founded 25 years ago, no one could have foreseen the current role shift of Great Britain in the European structure. In 1995, the institute was an initiative of the Berlin House of Representatives to recognize the merits of the victorious allied power around the divided city of Berlin. It was to research political and social science, law, literature, cultural studies and historical issues of the UK and of German-British relations. The fact that public lectures were already part of the programme at the time of its foundation was a trend-setting feature.
The M.A. British Studies course, which opened in 1999, has so far been attended by almost 500 students from all over the world. The Centre for British Studies has long since begun to look at the United Kingdom not only from a German perspective, but also in its European and global contexts.
