Mobile vaccination teams at Berlin’s higher education institutions
Under the slogan “The only thing that should be contagious is ideas”, ten Berlin universities and colleges are offering vaccination appointments on their campuses from 4th to 15th October 2021. They are acting in cooperation with the German Red Cross and other aid organisations, who are providing the mobile vaccination teams and vaccination buses. The Berlin Senate Department for Health, Care and Equality and the Senate Chancellery for Higher Education and Research are supporting the concerted campaign.
The Berlin universities and colleges are thereby expanding their vaccination campaigns against COVID-19 and setting a joint example at the start of the winter semester, which, after three semesters online, is to be conducted in large part in person on campus.
The target group being addressed is first and foremost fresher students, who will get to know their colleges and universities during numerous induction courses on site over the next few days; however, interested students and employees are also being appealed to. In principle, the offer from the mobile vaccination teams is also open to all interested citizens.
Berlin’s higher education institutions were already able to offer vaccinations to their employees via their university doctors from the beginning of June, and were then the first in the country to start targeted vaccination campaigns for students.
Just recently, the Berlin colleges and universities started a survey among their students to obtain information about their vaccination status. 42,015 students from ten higher education institutions took part in the non-representative survey, and more than 80 percent of them were shown to be fully vaccinated.
5,696 of the participants (13.6 percent) stated that they were not vaccinated. 393 students (0.9 percent) were among the group of those who have recovered from the virus. When asked whether they would take advantage of the offer of a vaccination from their higher education institution, 58.2 percent of those who had only received a single vaccine dose answered yes. Of the students who had not yet been vaccinated at all, 16.2 percent said they would consider such an offer.
