Sponsorship programme for students, doctoral candidates and researchers who have fled Ukraine
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) is very concerned to make it easier for the many refugee students, doctoral students and researchers from Ukraine to arrive in a foreign country. As far as possible, Humboldt-Universität would like to give the refugees who will be approaching the university in the coming weeks and months security and a perspective in our academic community. For this reason, Humboldt-Universität has set up a sponsorship programme for students, doctoral students and researchers who have fled Ukraine.

FAQ on the HU Sponsorship Programme
What is the HU Sponsorship Programme?
The sponsorship programme for refugee students, doctoral candidates and researchers from Ukraine is an essential part of the assistance and support offered by Humboldt-Universität within the framework of "Humboldt-Universität stands with Ukraine", with which HU helps refugees in a quick, uncomplicated and concrete way.
With the sponsorship programme, HU supports refugee students, doctoral students and researchers and enables them to continue their studies or research at HU and to participate in academic life.
The sponsorship programme finances the costs that arise for taking up and continuing a course of study or also for continuing academic work:
- Start-up assistance for refugee students, doctoral candidates and researchers.
- Semester fees for refugee students and doctoral candidates
- Scholarships for refugee students
- Transition scholarships for refugee researchers
How does the HU support Ukrainian refugee students and
doctoral students through the sponsorship programme?
As programme students or guest doctoral candidates at HU they receive
- Access to courses at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin,
- access to language courses,
- access to intercultural support events and psychological support
- and can orientate themselves as to whether they will apply for a regular degree programme with graduation from the winter semester onwards in the course of this semester, or can continue and complete their doctorate.
Semester fees for students and doctoral candidates
The sponsorship programme covers the costs incurred for taking up and continuing a course of study or for continuing academic work. For example, the Stiftung Humboldt-Universität finances semester fees of 265.64 euros for up to 100 refugee students and doctoral candidates. Humboldt-Universität waives the obligatory administrative fee of 50 euros for this group of people. This reduces the semester fee of 315 euros by this amount; what remains are the contributions for the constituted student body, the student union and the semester ticket of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association (VBB).
Scholarships for students and doctoral candidates
Students and doctoral candidates enrolled in the summer semester 2022 will be supported by the HU with a scholarship - financed by the Erasmus+ programme. With donations for the sponsorship programme, the HU would like to continue this support in the winter semester.
Start-up aid
The start-up aid enables the acquisition of necessary technology or materials, finances subsidies for language and integration courses as well as counselling and workshops.
In addition, by enrolling at the HU, they can take advantage of further care and support services offered by the Studierendenwerk.

How does the HU support refugee Ukrainian researchers
through the partnership programme?
Refugee Ukrainian researchers can be accepted as visiting researchers at HU after they have found an HU professor as a mentor who will support them in applying for other external funding programmes.
The Department of International Affairs supports researchers in their search for mentors.
As guest researchers at the HU, they are given the opportunity to
- the opportunity to carry out scientific work,
- Access to HU workrooms and laboratories,
- access to language courses,
- access to intercultural support events and psychological support and
- are supported by Humboldt-Universität academics and the International Affairs Department and the Research Service Centre when applying for funding programmes to continue financing their research projects.
Transitional fellowships for researchers
A central component of the sponsorship programme for researchers is funding for the transitional period until financial support from other third-party funding sources (Phillip Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, VW Foundation, Einstein Foundation, DFG and other programmes) takes effect. Transitional scholarships can only be applied for via HU-Mentors and faculties of the HU.
The HU and donations for the mentorship programme finance the transitional scholarships for researchers until the start of the follow-up funding. This financial security complements the content-related support at the HU and enables the continuation of academic work.
Start-up aid
The HU would like to use donations for the sponsorship programme to provide start-up assistance for refugee students, doctoral students and researchers, which finances the procurement of necessary technology or materials, subsidies for language and integration courses, as well as counselling and workshops.

About the organisation and for volunteers
Arrival Support
The volunteers receive the refugees arriving in Berlin and help them with their arrival in Germany. They arrange accommodation, accompany them to already organised private accommodation, help them buy train tickets for their onward journey, translate...
At the moment, we are especially looking for people who speak Ukrainian and Russian and who can help with communication at the arrival points at HBF, ZOB and Ostbahnhof.
We are also looking for Ukrainian and Russian-speaking psychologists who will be available at the arrival points.

Collection campaigns for donations in kind in the HU and Berlin
Exchange your first aid kit for Ukraine
Together with a friend Cluster Member Mario Cypko collects (expired) first aid kits for the Ukrainians who cannot flee. Also needed are (larger) flashlights, powerbanks and thermal imaging cameras (for finding victims). These are regularly brought directly to Ukraine. The action takes place in cooperation with a hospital in Lviv and a training center for volunteers in the region around Lviv. Donations can be brought to the MoA Office during regular office hours (Mon-Thu, 10 am-2 pm).
Why first aid kits?
In the old car or home first aid boxes there are many sterile packed first aid products, which are otherwise often thrown away, but are very much needed in Ukraine. This action is aimed at companies and institutich»s with many employees in a few locations so that the logistics are not too complicated. It is a very good opportunity to provide individual and simple help by the employees and save lives in the process.
