Basic salary
The basic salary as a minimum salary is pensionable and participates in the general salary adjustments (dynamisation). The monthly basic salary according to the salary table applicable in Berlin (as of 1 February 2025) is as follows
- Salary group W1: 5,432.93 euros
- Salary group W2: 7,088.87 euros
- Grade W3: 8,086.42 euros
Appointment benefits
Appointment benefits can be granted for a limited and/or unlimited period or as a one-off payment. Benefits that are granted for an indefinite period are pensionable for at least two years up to 40 per cent of the respective basic salary and are subject to future salary adjustments.
The amount of the benefit is part of the salary negotiations and is based on various criteria:
- Qualifications of the person concerned
- applicant situation and labour market situation in the relevant subject
- available evaluation results
- Amount of previous remuneration from full-time employment
- any competing offers to be considered
After taking up the post, appointment salaries can only be renegotiated by means of an external call and the commencement of negotiations to stay.
Functional performance references
Professors can be granted functional benefits for the fulfilment of functions or special tasks within the framework of university self-administration. This can be, for example, the assumption of an office in the dean's office or the management of a non-university research institution. Functional benefits are only granted for the duration of the function in question. As a rule, they are not pensionable. You can find out about the current amount of functional performance pay in the President's Directive on the Award of Functional Performance Pay in the W salary scale (Official Gazette No. 15/2024).
Special benefits
The salary legislation currently in force in Berlin provides for the possibility of awarding performance-related pay for special achievements that are above average and have generally been achieved over several years in the areas of research, teaching, continuing education or the promotion of young talent. The benefits are awarded upon application by the professors. The applications are assessed by expert committees and submitted to the President for a decision.
The exact regulations are set out in the statutes on the awarding of special performance-related pay in the W salary scale (Official Gazette No. 24/2024).
Family allowance
The family allowance is part of the salary of civil servants and is based on family circumstances.
It is based on the current status in Berlin (1 February 2025):
| Family allowance | Sum |
|---|---|
| 1st child | 142,44 euros |
| 2nd child | 142,44 euros |
| 3rd child | 819,76 euros |
| 4th child and further children | 678,99 euros |
It must be taken into account whether the children are entitled to a family allowance (depending on age and place of residence). For more detailed information, please contact the personnel department.
Annual special payment
In Berlin, a special payment of 900 euros is paid with the current salary for the month of December if all eligibility requirements are met. This is increased by 50.00 euros for each eligible child. For more detailed information, please contact the Personnel Office.
Pensionability
The basic salary is pensionable in full and the appointment benefits, if they are granted for an indefinite period, are generally pensionable up to 40% of the basic salary. The amount of the pension depends on
- the amount of pensionable salary and
- the pensionable period of service.
The annual bonus is also pensionable.
