The European Commission has updated its "Living Guidelines". These provide guidance on the responsible use of AI systems in research.
With its Living guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research the European Commission aims to support researchers, research organisations and funding bodies in the responsible use of generative AI systems. These have now been updated.
New additions include recommendations that the use of AI should be made transparent when working with third parties. Furthermore, the guidelines now place even greater emphasis on researchers’ responsibility for the output: researchers should verify cited sources, factual claims and the content of summaries. Cross-validation is also recommended, particularly for automated data analysis. The guidelines also consider it important to create a trusting atmosphere in which researchers are encouraged to make the use of AI transparent. Research funders are additionally made particularly aware of the problem of ‘hidden prompts’, i.e. small instructions that can lead to improved evaluations of, for example, grant applications.
