Humboldt Prize

The Humboldt Prize - i.e. the prize of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin for exceptional aca-demic work by students or junior academics - has been awarded since 2008 according to the following new guidelines:

  • EUR 750 for bachelor’s dissertations,
  • EUR 1500 for master’s, diploma or public examination papers,
  • EUR 3000 for doctoral theses,
  • EUR 2000 for a paper which engages with the topics “Judaism” or “Anti-Semitism”.


Particular academic achievements of students and doctoral candidates can also be taken into account, for example projects which have been developed since the last submission deadline (1 July of the year past), but which were not associated with the degree categories named above.

Only deans can make nominations.

In principle, a maximum of one paper per category and institute or faculty (for monofaculties) may be submitted.

The prizes will be handed over to the prizewinners at the opening of the respective academic year by the president of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.



The following documents should be submitted in PDF format in two files (maximum of 10 MB) and divided as follows:


  • The degree thesis, if it has been completed after the closing date for applications of the previous year.
  • at least two expert reports,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • list of publications,
  • statement of opinion from the dean,
  • a short summary provided by the writer of the paper, in generally understandable language, in which the relevance of the paper in its academic and interdisciplinary context is also clearly expressed (maximum of 3,000 characters,
  • copy of the degree certificate or PhD certificate.
