Offers for refugees

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) has launched a number of programmes enabling refugees to access the university.

Drop-in hours for refugees

Every Tuesday, 1 to 4 p.m., on Campus Mitte, Unter den Linden 6, Student Service Center (German, Arabic, English, every first Tuesday Farsi, too), without previous notice.

From May 8 on the drop-in hour will be between 1 and 3 p. m.

Programme HU4Refugees

As participant of the programme you can join lectures and make examinations at Humboldt. The application period for the summer semester 2018 is over.

Conditions
  • knowledge of German on level GER B 1 at least
  • status as refugee
  • high school diploma/university entrance certificate

Language Courses

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin offers in co-operation with Freie Universität Berlin (FU) und Technische Universität Berlin (TU) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in summer semester 2018 language courses only on level GER B2 and GER C1. The application period for the summer semester 2018 is over.

Application for the courses

Refugees who are interested in participating in a language course at HU can apply between February 26 and March 4, 2018. Applications beyond this application period will not be processed. Please note that we can only accept applicationswith an interest in in courses of studies that are offered at HU.

Please send in the application form together with the required documents between February 26 and March 4, 2018, to refugees.welcome@hu-berlin.de

  • Proofs required:
    • proof of your status as refugee, e. g. residence permit or proof of registration as an asylum-seeker (BÜMA, AKN)
    • high-school diploma and university entrance certificates
    • copy of the language certificate of a language course (GER B1/B2)
    • favoured subject (must be part of the course catalogue of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
  • if you have studied before: transcript of records or graduation certificate

Please keep in mind, that only complete applications can be processed. Qualified applicants will be invited via email to participate in a placement test that will most likely take place on March 21,2018.

Preliminary check of certificates

As part of our drop-in hours for refugees we offer a preliminary check of your documents for a free of charge application via uni-assist.

Consultation proof

Please hand in the following documents for a proof of consultation, either in the drop-in hour or as scan via email:

  • proof of your status as refugee, e. g. residence permit or proof of registration as an asylum-seeker (BÜMA)
  • high-school diploma and university entrance certificates
  • if you have studied before: transcript of records or graduation certificate
  • favoured subject (must be part of the course catalogue of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin)
  • your email address

The proof will be sent by email as PDF.

Guest-student initiative for refugees

As of this winter semester, refugees may join HU as guest students at no charge and attend standard lectures and teaching sessions.

Library use

The University Library is issuing temporary user cards: refugees who have submitted an application for asylum in Berlin are given a user card on presentation of their temporary ‘residence permit for the duration of the asylum procedure’. Please adhere to the library's regulations for study desks.
