Course structure and content
The focus is on the historical periods of Ancient History, Medieval History, and Modern and Contemporary History, ranging from Greco-Roman antiquity to the present day. Students examine political, social, economic, and cultural developments and the interactions between them. They also reflect on how history is written and engage with various methods of historical research and source criticism.
Depending on the chosen specialization (with or without a teacher training option), subject-specific didactics are also included, teaching students how to prepare and present historical topics for classroom use.
Historical science as a main subject in a combined Bachelor's degree (120 ECTS credits)

The history programme at Humboldt-Universität is characterized by its broad subject area, methodological diversity, and interdisciplinary orientation. You will develop the ability to critically analyze, argue, and clearly present complex historical issues – both orally and in writing. You will also hone your judgment, language skills, and analytical thinking.
Furthermore, students acquire practical skills, for example, through practical modules, archival research, or exhibition projects.

A degree in history or historical studies qualifies you for a wide range of career fields. Graduates work in academia and research, archives and museums, journalism and publishing, as well as in political consulting, cultural management, public relations, and adult education. With a teaching qualification, the path typically leads to teacher training and then to teaching.
