Course structure and content
The master’s program prepares students for qualified professional careers as well as for doctoral studies. All modules are taught in English. Graduates are equipped to analyze complex challenges in the fields of horticulture and plant sciences and to develop and implement targeted solutions that take both scientific and societal contexts into account. Throughout the program, students acquire in-depth subject-specific, theoretical, methodological, and social competencies essential for independent scientific work, as well as creativity, innovative capacity, and a strong sense of responsibility in a dynamic professional environment.
A key feature of the program is its strong international orientation. Students have the opportunity to study at internationally renowned horticultural research institutes at European partner universities and to select courses from a shared international module portfolio. After successfully completing the program, graduates are qualified for careers in research and teaching at universities, participation in national and international research and development projects, and professional positions in fields such as horticulture and plant production, public administration, the pharmaceutical industry, food trade, science communication, as well as research, development, and related services.
In the first semester, students complete compulsory modules totaling 30 ECTS at Humboldt University of Berlin. The second and third semesters consist of compulsory elective modules totaling 50 ECTS. These may be taken at HU Berlin or partly (up to 45 ECTS) from interdisciplinary elective modules offered by a partner university. In addition, 10 ECTS must be completed from further elective modules.
In the fourth semester, students write their master’s thesis (30 ECTS). The thesis can be completed either at HU Berlin or in cooperation with a partner university.
Special features
Admission to the master’s program requires a university degree equivalent to a German bachelor’s or diploma in the life sciences. Relevant fields include, in particular, horticultural sciences, agricultural sciences, forestry sciences, environmental sciences, ecology, and biology.
The program is characterized by its international orientation, interdisciplinary content, and strong research focus. Students can complete modules at European partner universities and acquire advanced knowledge in horticultural and plant sciences, as well as methodological competencies for scientific work and the development of sustainable solutions.
