Course structure and content
The course provides fundamental specialist knowledge of the languages, literatures and cultures listed above using selected thematic focuses. This knowledge covers both historic-diachronic and synchronic aspects of study materials, and includes inter-cultural relationships. As well as study content relating to individual languages, the course also looks at comparative Slavonic and comparative linguistics aspects. The course aims to provide the ability to handle texts analytically; acquire key techniques of scientific and systematic work, research, written and oral presentation - the focus of learning communicative skills is the acquisition of a foreign language; develop complex scientific interrelations between specialist history and culture and critically engage with scientific theories and methods, as well as to independently develop scientific enquiries; provide career-related additional qualifications and career-orienting elements e.g. in the fields of media, publishing, cultural management, activity in international organisations and further education.

In addition to specialised study, students acquire subject-specific, non-specialist and interdisciplinary key qualifications of 20 CP. Modules can be freely chosen from the designated module catalogues of other subjects or central institutions.
Special features
The following languages may be selected: Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovak and Ukrainian. You can begin your studies with or without prior knowledge. Students without language skills can complete a preparatory tutorial programme. An adequate knowledge of German is also required.
The subject is part of the field of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Slavonic Studies examines the Slavonic languages, literatures and cultures. Solid foreign language training in the selected Slavonic language goes hand in hand with the acquisition of specialist skills. The course deals with linguistic and literary studies phenomena, but also includes historical, regional studies and cultural studies issues.

Career opportunities & prospects
With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures, you can study the Master's programmes “Cultures and Literatures of Central and Eastern Europe” and “Slavonic Languages”. You can find these and further master's degree programmes in the overview of HU study programmes or via the database Hochschulkompass nationwide.
Successful completion of the degree programme qualifies graduates for all professional fields in which in-depth knowledge of Slavic cultures, literatures, and languages is required, or where the key competencies acquired during a course of study in literary or linguistic sciences are needed.
These fields of activity are found primarily in media and journalism, publishing and cultural management, press and public relations, international and European organizations and agencies, language technology, education and professional development, as well as in associations and foundations.
The Bachelor’s programme in Slavic Languages and Literatures qualifies graduates for further academic study.
