Events and trainings for international students and doctoral candidates

The Welcome Centre at Humboldt-Universität supports students and doctoral candidates from abroad. It offers free workshops on a range of topics as well as events for meeting others and networking.

The Welcome Centre’s supervision programme brings together activities in three areas: Arriving and Getting Started, Belonging and Wellbeing, and Future Skills. The aim is to provide guidance, encourage exchange, and strengthen skills that will support you in your studies and everyday life in Berlin.

The programme is free of charge and open to students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines. Take a look and sign up!

Are you new to the university, taking part in an exchange programme, or coming to Germany for a full degree programme or your doctorate at HU? We look forward to welcoming you and would like to help make your start easier – as the first steps in a new city and a new learning environment can be challenging.

To help you begin your time at our university confidently and successfully, we offer regular consultation hours in addition to orientation events and kick-off Zoom sessions, where you can get answers to your organisational questions.

We organise appointments with the citizens’ registration office (Bürgeramt) and provide information on applying for residence permits in order to support you with the formal steps of settling in. Last but not least, there are numerous events where we introduce the university and its services and give you opportunities to connect with others and make new friends.

Spending your study period in another country is an enriching experience – and sometimes quite challenging. We want you to feel a sense of belonging and truly at home during your studies at Humboldt-Universität, and to shape your time in Berlin actively and with confidence. For this purpose, we organise various workshop and networking formats throughout the semester.

Several times each semester, Lunchtalks take place where you can get to know the university and its services, as well as organisations outside the university. At our regularly held Global Café, you can meet other international students at the International Service Centre, play games together, talk about university life, and make friends – in a relaxed atmosphere and without learning goals or other expectations.

To provide even more support, HU works together with organisations outside the university and cooperates with the Self-Help Contact and Information Centre (SEKIS). Together, we show you how you can become active yourself and build peer support groups.

You are studying in a world that is changing rapidly, becoming more complex and appearing uncertain in many areas. In this environment, transversal competences – so-called “Future Skills” – are becoming increasingly important. At Humboldt-Universität, you can specifically develop skills that are useful during your studies and beyond.

Our activities in this area focus on topics such as self-leadership, communication, collaboration, and resilience. In compact one-day workshops, we address real challenges from your everyday study life and strengthen your personal and social competences. The trainings create a space for reflection, exchange, and for planning concrete steps to apply what you have learned.

The trainings are guided by the principles of lifelong learning, democratic learning, and Global Citizenship Education. They are designed to help you understand global contexts, appreciate diversity, and actively participate in pluralistic communities.
