Research Project “Sounds of Water” Connects Music, Imagination, and Citizen Science
The two-year project “Sounds of Water: Mapping Multimodal Music-Evoked Imaginings through Citizen Science” is led by Dr. Mats Küssner (HU) and Prof. Dr. Elizabeth Margulis (Princeton University) and is funded through the Princeton–Humboldt Strategic Partnership Initiative. It investigates how water-related music evokes mental images and thoughts, and how social and cultural factors influence music-induced imaginings. A central element is a citizen science game, conducted as part of the “Water” exhibition in the Humboldt Laboratory. Visitors are invited to listen to musical pieces and share their inner images and associations. Through the interdisciplinary combination of music psychology, cognitive science, and imagination research, the project makes an important contribution to understanding musical perception and creative processes.
