German Centers for Research and Innovation

The German Centers for Research and Innovation (DWIH) are a network of German scientific organisations, universities and the research-intensive private sector. Humboldt-Universität supports the DWIH New York and the DWIH São Paulo.

The aim of The German Centers for Research and Innovation (DWIH) is to strengthen Germany’s position as a centre of excellence. To this end, they operate in New York, São Paulo, New Delhi, Tokyo and San Francisco.

As an associate supporter of the DWIH New York and the DWIH São Paulo, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is a voting member of the DWIHs’ advisory board and plays an active role in strategic and substantive cooperation.

Opportunities and Insights

Supporters can apply to the DWIH for grants for events and activities that contribute to our shared goals. Please contact us if you are planning to submit an application. Applications are submitted centrally via the International Office.

  1. As part of a year-round open call, the DWIH New York supports events that enhance the visibility of the German innovation landscape, expand German-American exchange and promote sustainable cooperation. Applications may be submitted on an ongoing basis (priority dates: 1 June and 1 December); funding is awarded until the budget is exhausted. Further information can be found on the DWIH New York website.
  2. Through its programme work, the DWIH São Paulo sets specific priorities to strategically strengthen German-Brazilian cooperation in science, research and innovation. As part of the annual call for proposals, institutions within the network of supporters can apply for grants for projects that contribute to the DWIH’s objectives and have an impact beyond individual events. The call for proposals is usually published at the beginning of the year and is available here.

As part of the project “Socionarratology – Mapping an Interdisciplinary Field between Sociology and Literary Studies”, funded by the Princeton-Humboldt Strategic Partnership Initiative, the DWIH New York supported the event “What is Socionarratology?” at New York University’s (NYU) Deutsche Haus in September 2025.

Philipp Felsch and Marc Ortmann (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) as well as Florian Fuchs and Sarah Rivett (Princeton University) presented their research on the interplay between literature and the social sciences and explored how narratives shape social processes. The presentations were followed by a moderated discussion with Christopher Wood (NYU). The event provided an interdisciplinary forum for exchange and networking and served as an example of how the DWIH promotes transatlantic dialogue in the humanities and social sciences.
