President’s Executive Council

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is governed by the President’s Executive Council, which consists of the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President for Research (currently represented by the Commissioner for Research) and the Vice President for Finance, Human Resources and Operations.

Tasks and areas of responsibility

The President’s Executive Council is a central body of the university - alongside the University Senate and Academic Council - and works according to the collegial principle, with the President having the authority to issue directives. The work of the President’s Executive Council is supported by the Presidium Representative for International and European Affairs.

The tasks of the President’s Executive Council include the overall development and strategic direction of Humboldt-Universität. It sets priorities and goals for the development of the university and develops corresponding strategies and implementation concepts. Aspects such as internationalisation, funding, study programmes, quality assurance and equal opportunities play an important role in this.

The President’s Executive Council represents the university to external stakeholders such as political decision-makers, business partners and the public, thus promoting dialogue between the university and society. In an annual report, it informs the Board of Governors and Academic Council about the fulfilment of the university's tasks.

Julia von Blumenthal

Prof. Dr Julia von Blumenthal has been President of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 1 October 2022. She is a habilitated political scientist.

Niels Pinkwart

Prof Dr Niels Pinkwart has been Vice President for Academic Affairs since October 2021. He studied computer science and mathematics on the teacher training programme at the University of Duisburg.

Niels Helle-Meyer

Niels Helle-Meyer has held the office of Vice President for Finance, Human Resources and Operations since 1 February 2023. He studied law with a focus on constitutional and administrative law.

Since 2020, Dr Yoan Vilain has served as the Vice-Provost for International and European Affairs. He studied law in Lyon, Paris and Berlin, and completed his doctorate at the Sorbonne.
