Artwork of the month

The kitchen piece, which transports us to a Dutch kitchen of the 17th century, is a special rarity of the art collection in several respects. It is the oldest painting, the only one from the Netherlands and with this subject.

The international cultural project ‘Mindscapes’ concludes with the publication of 'Das resonante Museum', a book launch at the Gropius Bau and the launch of its online archive.

One may not immediately recognise it as a work of art, since at first glance it is a warning sign that we know from everyday life. However, the warning is repeated on every step, a seemingly exaggerated potentiation.

Over a period of a thousand years, Chinese girls had their feet bound to shorten them. Europeans looked at this beauty practice with a mixture of fascination and astonishment.

Just as the university has few busts of female scientists, works by female artists are also significantly under-represented. There is one famous exception from the 19th century.

Goethea is a typical warm-house plant, the genus described for the first time in 1821. The HU Zierpflanzen-Collection is dedicated to researching this – right through to the pot plant in the end consumer’s home.

One would hardly expect to find a lifelike cow gazing back at you amongst an art collection. Yet animal sculpture is an ancient theme in art, dating back to prehistoric times, and one that underwent enormous changes in the 20th century.

In addition to its core collections, the Lautarchiv holds other interesting sub-collections too which have tended to remain in the background until now, contextual significance unclear. For example, three Indian drums.
