Portraits of university rectors usually follow a time-honoured tradition. Although the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität was founded in 1810, it was not until the 1980s that the Berlin university began its series of portraits of rectors.

Prof. Dr Viktoria Tkaczyk, a historian of science and media at Humboldt-Universität and an associate member of the Zentrum für Kulturtechnik, was awarded the Caroline von Humboldt full professorship in December.

“Unearthing Collections” explores the ethics of collecting: from glacier samples and human remains to political art, the contributions shed light on the conflicts and responsibilities involved in preserving cultural and material artefacts.

Prof. Dr Daniel Tyradellis, Deputy Director of the Zentrum für Kulturtechnik, is the editor of Werner Hamacher’s book ‘Mutter Museum’, which has just been published.

The Humboldts are, of course, well represented at the university. Alongside traditional monuments and busts, however, there are also modern depictions in which the Humboldts sometimes have to be sought out.
