Projektbeschreibung

The rapid progress of the classical sciences after Winckelmann's death is of constitutive importance for understanding the project of German classicism. The picture of antique culture was enriched, expanded and continually re-envisioned. The dynamic interrelations between literature, art, and the classical sciences will be examined in three projects:

1. Concepts of antiquity in the German classical sciences from Heyne to Creuzer and their reception by authors from Wieland to Grillparzer;

2. Classical knowledge in Weimar: Boettiger, Fernow, Meyer, and Riemer, and

3. Transformations of antiquity in German literature (drama and novel) 1830-1910;

4. Transformations of antiquity in classicist modern literature 1910-1939.
