Beschreibung

How can constitutions help societies move beyond violence, authoritarianism,
and historical injustice? And what happens when the promises of constitutional
transformation remain incomplete?

This event brings together two distinct regional perspectives on constitutional
transitions and transformative constitutionalism. Drawing on lived and
professional experience from South Africa’s constitutional transition,
alongside collaborative contemporary socio-legal research with Indigenous
survivor communities in post-conflict Guatemala, the speakers will critically
reflect on the promises and limitations of constitutional change in societies
marked by repression, authoritarianism, and mass violence.

Speakers:

Gretel Mejía Bonifazi (Junior Fellow at RefLex and a postdoctoral research fellow
and co-lecturer at the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University.)
Theunis Roux (Senior Fellow at RefLex and a Professor of Law in the School of
Global and Public Law at UNSW Sydney.)
