Prof. Dr. Georg Nolte was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on November 12th in New York. Georg Nolte has been Professor of Public Law and International Law at the Faculty of Law of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2008.

A total of five judges were elected to the International Court of Justice for a nine-year term from February 6, 2021. The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is the main judicial organ of the United Nations and consists of 15 judges.

On the election of Georg Nolte as judge in The Hague, Sabine Kunst, President of Humboldt-Universität said:  

“This is a great honor for Professor Nolte, but also for HU. I wish Georg Nolte every success in this high office. He will certainly represent his subject and his university in an outstanding way in The Hague."

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Dr. Stefan Grundmann, will personally convey the warmest, collegial and friendly congratulations of the entire faculty to Georg Nolte. Grundmann emphasises how much Prof. Nolte has been and continues to be a pillar of the faculty for the past 13 years, how the new development through 14 years of membership in the UN Law Commission - for the further development of international law - already appears to be in place, as Prof. Nolte has been a prominent researcher for decades, not least as the initiator of the DFG research group "The International Rule of Law - Rise or Decline?". Above all, however, he sees the new judge as an impressive lawyer in the classical sense, with clear principles, firmly grounded as much in the Kantian tradition of ethical self-responsibility and commitment as in the Hegelian tradition of thinking in terms of categories of community, particularly linked to the idea of indispensable world peace and inviolable human rights.
