All(e)in Berlin

An interactive British-Berlin Event held by the Centre for British Studies

All(e)in Berlin is an interactive event organized by the M.A. students of the Centre for British Studies of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. This event will showcase how British people feel about, live in and interact with Berlin. It will take place in the Ehrenhof of the main building of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, on 1 July 2022.

All(e)in Berlin consists of three parts:

The walking tours will guide participants through different parts of Berlin: the city’s vibrant queer history and the sights that inspired visiting British women writers in the 1920s. The panel discussion will ask questions about the real-life experiences of Britons living in Berlin and the particularities of their experience in a post-Brexit Europe.

At 15.00, we invite you to “Walking the History: Queer Berlin”, our interactive walking quiz. The event will provide an overview of queer history in Berlin from the Weimar era to the present day and show the close connection between queer communities in Berlin and the UK. Participants compete to win a prize in this entertaining walking tour.

You are welcome to register for this event on the event's website.

Next, at 16.00, join us on a journey to the past. The walking tour “A City in Words: When Women Write Letters” will visit places that enchanted British women writers who visited, to quote Virginia Woolf, this “sad but lovely” city in the 1920s. Participants will enjoy readings of the works and letters of such writers and thinkers as Woolf, Vita Sackville-West and Alix Strachey. To register for the event, please visit the event's website.

The final part of All(e)in Berlin begins at 17.00. “A Conversation on Identity: When Britons Meet Berliners” is a panel discussion on the experiences of British people living in a new environment – Berlin.

Join our student moderator and our special guests Katy Derbyshire and Daniel Tetlow as they take a deeper look at the notion of adapting and discuss if and how British identity is challenged by living here.
