KOSMOS – The place for innovative researchers

First KOSMOS Summer University takes place in September/ Applications are welcome until 15 July 2011

The first KOSMOS Summer University of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, KOSMOS 2011, will take place from 17 September until 25 September, 2011 on the topic „ Frontiers of Organic/ Inorganic Hybrid Materials for Electronics and Optoelectronics”. It is organized by the Integrative Research institute for the Sciences IRIS Adlershof in collaboration with Chiba University Japan and the National University of Singapore. We cordially invite Master students in the final phase of their studies, doctoral candidates and postdocs to work here together with internationally acknowledged experts in the field of physics and chemistry of hybrid materials.

KOSMOS realises educational core objectives of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin within a particular academic format and enables scientific talents to conduct interdisciplinary and complex research in an international environment.

For a KOSMOS Summer University Humboldt-Universität, invites scholars from two partner universities to Berlin to involve them in the organisation and preparation and to ensure a continuous flow of information between the partners.
KOSMOS Summer University is designed to encompass a maximum of contact time in flexible formats; for instance joint laboratory research, discussion forums or excursions. The research results will be evaluated during the KOSMOS sessions.
“The unique new structure allows researchers to go beyond the pure representation of recent findings – jointly, the participants are able to reach new, possibly groundbreaking conclusions. The coalescences of approaches from different scientific backgrounds will allow radical new insights”, says Jürgen P. Rabe, Professor for the Physics of Macromolecules at the Department of Physics. Together with his colleague Professor Norbert Koch, he will head the first KOSMOS Summer University.

“The KOSMOS Summer University is a significant project within the internationalisation strategy of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and brings together scientists, researchers and students of HU with theit colleagues from our international partner universities to enable shared learning and research based on the Humboldtian educational ideal of training young minds while doing top-level research. The Summer University will thus allow its participants to share a Humboldtian experience of simultaneous learning and research”, Prof. Jan-Hendrik Olbertz, President of Humboldt-Universität, explains.
Next year Humboldt-Universität plans a KOSMOS Summer University with the Universidad de Buenos Aires and a group of Latin American universities. In the years thereafter we will host two additional KOSMOS Summer Universities per year.
