Refugees Welcome: HU offers more courses for refugees

DAAD supports offers designed to provide regular access by refugees to study programmes

Since the winter semester of 2016/2017, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), has been offering four additional German language courses for refugees in order to prepare them in a targeted way for access to regular study programmes. The HU is now able to offer these courses until 2018, having secured follow-up support from the DAAD.

The German language courses from the winter semester will be continued, and a further course is due to begin in April 2017. The HU has received around 654,000 euros in funds for courses in 2017 and 2018 from the German Academic Exchange Service “Integra” funding line. The course offer is aimed at refugees interesting in studying, who from March 2017 can also take part in a new programme called HU4Refugees.

The DAAD is also funding the continuation of the student support programmes for refugees at the faculties, with around 219,000 euros from the “Welcome” funding line. Their mentoring and support services for each specific department are aimed at making it easier for refugees to enter everyday life in a German higher education institution. The Refugee Law Clinic also offers free legal advice on questions relating to asylum and aliens law. The work of voluntary initiatives will be further intensified in the future through the student coordination centres, which were already established last year, and which can now continue their operation.

The offers for refugees at the HU are all part of the core initiative “Refuges Welcome at the HU”, which aims to make it easier for refugees to access higher education, to join study and academic programmes and to enter everyday life at the HU.

Refugees who are interested in studying at the HU can visit the open surgery for refugees on Tuesdays from 1 pm to 4 pm for advice and information (Student Service Center, Unter den Linden 6; no appointment needed).
