Advisory Board of the Institute for Islamic Theology Starts with Three Associations

Joint Announcement of the Berlin Senate Chancellery: Higher Education and Research and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin:

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and the Berlin Senate Chancellery: Higher Education and Research are well on their way to establishing Islamic theology at the HU. Following intensive discussions on 13 April 2018 between the Senate, the HU and the Islamic associations, a third Islamic association, the Islamische Föderation in Berlin e.V, has agreed to participate in the Advisory Board and to sign the Cooperation Agreement. The Islamische Gemeinschaft der schiitischen Gemeinden Deutschlands e.V. and the Zentralrat der Muslime in Deutschland already announced their approval of the Cooperation Agreement in April.

An important step has thus been taken toward the constitution of the Advisory Board for Islamic Theology. Three – rather than five, as originally planned – associations will be represented in the Advisory Board. Per the rules of the Cooperation Agreement, the inclusion of other associations is possible. The HU is presently initiating the process for setting up the Institute. This includes consultations and decisions by various inner-university bodies, with the aim of having the Board of Trustees of the HU decide about the establishing of a Central Institute for Islamic Theology at the end of June. The procedural steps for making appointments to the four professorships needing to be filled should begin immediately thereafter.
