The debates will focus around the question of whether the public sphere can be detached from the national constellation of society and reconstituted as a critical counterforce of economic and political globalization. This requires a complex reassessment of the normative foundations of the public sphere and its institutional requirements in light of new media and new forms of government. For that purpose, experts from different disciplines, international as well as German, will enter into an interdisciplinary dialogue, testing out new theoretical and methodological pathways as well as possibilities for future research cooperation.
