Humboldt-Universität among the top 50 universities in the world

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin came 49th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, making it the 3rd highest-ranked university in Germany.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) has risen by 31 places in the THE World University Ranking 2015-16, resulting in it being named amongst the best 50 universities in the world. HU rose from fourth to third amongst German universities. Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Heidelberg University were ranked 29th and 37th respectively.

The California Institute of Technology retained its crown, followed by the University of Oxford and Stanford University. ETH Zurich, in ninth place, is the best university in continental Europe.

Germany, with 20, has the fourth-highest number of universities in the top 200 – behind the USA, Great Britain, and Japan. Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education magazine, attributed the climb of German universities up the rankings to the Excellence Initiative.

Both of the profile partners of HU, Princeton University (7th) and the National University of Singapore (26th), also performed excellently. The National University of Singapore is, according to the ranking, Asia’s best university.

A total of five criteria were used to assess the universities: teaching, research, citations, inter-national outlook, and industry income. HU performed particularly well in research and citations, closely followed by teaching and international outlook.
